I'm doing some research on the phenomenon of Kichkandi.

They may sound like folktales but there are people who swear they have seen them and that they are real. Does anyone have info or experience on this subject?

"... the voluptuous damsel out to seduce unwary travellers at night. It is believed this evil spirit in female human form slowly sucks the lifeblood out of men in repeated sexual acts. In China they have a similar female ghost known as Nu Gui and in medieval European folklore there is the Succubus. Perhaps it was the ancient version of the HIV Aids epidemic. There is one tell-tale physical abnormality of the Kichkandi, the ankles are joined to the legs backwards with the feet protruding behind. Men are advised to check the feet before giving a lift to an ersatz damsel in distress at night."

It is and was the talk of every truck driver, in 80s, 90s..there used to be teachers from Darjeleeng,the hip hop guys who enjoyed road side damsels in their days specially in the nights and used to share in such a descriptive and adventurous ways fascinating every people with foot in opposite direction. They were imaged as the most gorgeous women created with the defect in feet and manmohinis who could be never forgotten. It's a tale tell story stuff that new generation born in 90s didn't get hints.

Those stories used to to facinate me in my childhood. But they are not true. I wonder how people see those things or do they make these things up.... Well recently I encountered a ghost. I know it sounds ridiculous and it is ridiculous. My roommate and I used to live in an old house and we heard separately and together person walking on stairs. It was frightening but we dismissed the idea of it being ghost. But some of our friends still say that it was in fact a ghost. So now whenever that thing comes I make stories to make it seem like a true story. Later I tell them its made up......

My grandfather used to tell me similar stories about kichkandi. And he mentioned me that those ladies seems very beautiful and used to call the name of person to go with her. And as described those ladies had foot facing backwards and hollow body from backside. preety scary tell but not sure they are true...never seen anything like that.

किचकन्याको कथा (Part 1)

पहिले पहिले धेरै पहिले कन्तिपुरका तान्त्रिक राजा प्रताप मल्ल एुटी सुन्दरी किचकन्या संग लोप परेको र आदि इत्यादी घट्ना, दुर्घट्ना भै रानी पोखरी बनाउन लागाए रे भन्ने कथा त सुनकै होलाउ।
परमाण खोज्ने भए अझै रानीपोखरीको दक्षिण छेउमा मालिकको शालिक सहित हात्तीले किचकन्नेको अस्तुलाई कुल्चिराखेको अद्यापि छंदै छ।

२०४७-४८ साल तिर पुल्चोक क्याम्पस पढ्नेहरुलाई हेक्का होला नै किच कन्याको कथा। पुरानो बागमती पूल भांसिदा, थापाथलि प्रसुतिग्रिह नजिकबाट् अस्थायी पूल निर्माण भए लगत्तै किचकन्नेले मध्यरात गुलजार गरेको घट्ना सुनेकै हुनु पर्दछ। १० -२० जना जति किचकन्नेको शिकार भए। क्सैको पनि प्राण पखेरु उडेन तर धन सम्पति चाहि उडे। नक्कली किचकन्नेको आतंकले ३-४ महिना त्यो बाटो हिड्ने बाठो देखि लाटो सम्म आक्रान्त भए।

अब असलि कुरा मा फर्कौं। किचकन्या भन्नाले, अत्यन्त राम्री कन्या केटी,हेर्दा बत्तिसै लक्षणले सजिएकी ( कसैलाई एश्वर्य राय, कसैलाई हेमा मालिनि, कसैलाई करिश्मा के सी जस्तो लाग्न सक्छ), तर खुट्टाको कुर्कुच्चा भने उल्टो फर्किएको हुने प्रेतात्मा, भूतात्मा, के के अत्मा हुन्।
सुन्दरीको पछि जो लाग्यो, त्यो फस्यो।
कतिपयले ज्यान गुमाए रे, कतिले ध्यान गुमाए।

तिनै किचकन्नेको पनि मन्दिर् हुंदो रैछ, मूर्ति हुंदो रैछ। आश्चर्यको बिषय हुन सक्ला।
न भए सुन्दरी पुज्ने चलन अनादीकाल देखि रैछ भनेर बुझ्नु पर्ने हुन्छ।
त्यो किचकन्नेको नित्यपूजा र सुन्दरीलाई मन पर्ने पेंडा पूजा दिनहुं चढाइने गरेको अद्यापि देखिन्छ।

अब त्यो मन्दिर -मूर्ति कहां छ भन्ने उत्सुकता भए, काठमाडौको नक्सा पल्टाउनुस्।
हनुमान ढोकाबाट दक्षिण पश्चिम वा नया सडकको जुद्ध समसेरको शालिकलाई पछाडि पारेरे सिधै पश्चिम हान्नुस्। काष्ठमण्डप भन्ने एकै रुखबाट बनेको एतिहासिक मन्दिरमा पुग्नु हुने छ। काठमाडौं को नामाकरण नै त्यही काष्ठमण्डपबाट भएको ले यस्को मह्त्व त्यसै झल्किन्छ। ( अझ त्यस माथि ठुल्दाई को घर त्यहि मन्दिर् को नि ठ्याक्कै पश्चिम पट्टि, ३ गल्ली ३ चोक भित्र भाको ले यसको महत्वमा चार चाँद लागेको मान्नै पर्ने हुन्छ।)

हो त्यही काष्ठमण्डप पुगे पछि अझै दक्षिण तिर् हेर्ने हो भने २ बाटोको हांगो देखिन्छ। एक् बाटो, भिमसेनस्थान हुंदै कालिमाटी, टंकेश्वर्, ताहचल पुगिन्छ, अर्को बाटो, चिकमुगल, मजिपाट, जैसी देवल, ब्रम्हटोल हुदै टेकु पचली घाट् सम्म पुग्दछ।
अब त्यता सम्म नि जानु पर्दैन। काष्ठमण्डप मै उभिएर यी दुइ बाटो हेर्ने। दुइबाटो को बिचमा एुटा मन्दिर छ। सिंह सत्तल ( क्रिष्ण मन्दिर्) नामलेचिनिन्छ। भनिन्छ, काष्ठमण्डप बनाउदा त्यो अजङगको रुखबाट जति काठ झिके नि न सकेको र मन्दिर बनाई उभ्रेको काठबाट त्यो सत्तल् ( पाटि) बनाइेको थियो रे र सिं ल्यङ्गु सत: ( बाकि काठको सत्तल) बाट् अपभ्रंस भै सिंह सत्तल हुन गएको भन्ने किंबदन्ति पाइन्छ।

हो अब भने तपाई ठिक ठाउंमा अौनु भयो। त्यही सिंह सत्तल (जसको चारै तिर् पसल्हरु छन्)को पछाडि गल्ली भन्नुम् कि बाटो छ,बाटो पछाडि पसलहरु। नामुद ग्वारामरी किन्ने पसल( बारा, चटामरि , आलु व: बेच्ने पसल पनि छ। अब त्यो पसल् को चिकमुगल तिर् को कुन्ना को दोकान मुनि किचकन्नेको मूर्ति छ।


होस गरम् है साथी गाम्लेहरु हो, कहिं त्यो बाटो बाट् हिड्डा जानेर न जानेर, त्यो मूर्तिमा जुठो सुर्ति फ्यांकेमा, हतारमा नित्यकर्म गरेमा, वा अनेक किसिमको हेलाँ गरेमा, किचकन्या प्रकट भै,फेरि रानी पोखरी बनाउन लगाउन बेर छैन। आज लाई यो किचकन्ने को कथा यहीं समाप्त, यसको बाकी भाग जाँगर चलेको बेला राख्ने नै छु। किचकन्नेको जालमा न फसम्, आफनै हालमा रमाऔं। तारेमाम्।

Wasn't there used to be some technique like light a fire, or tie a thinner rope on their ankle to track down their bones or something?? I remember vividly...

In my opinion, though it is tempting to believe that Kichkandi might be true after hearing several stories from several different individuals but logically I don't think it might be true focusing esp. on the fact that they have their feet facing backward, their hollow back and suck the lifeblood of men and according to what I have heard before when I was growing up, it usually takes a week or so of intimacy before the men dies...So what I am trying to picture is, during the intimate moment, if the guy is giving her in missionary position then he should be able to see the orientation of her feet. If the guy is giving her doggy then he should be able to see her hollow back and the feet too...now even if she is dressed during the time, at least the feet would be too much to miss. Now who is the right mind would seduce such a deformed girl? No offense to any form of actual disability but still I have not heard of any abnormality of such. In this case, the guy should be alarmed right? Now matter how disabled a person is, he/she normally would not have opposite feet and hollow back and be beautiful at the same time, I believe. Let's even assume the guy was too horny that he chose to ignore any irregular physical traits during the first encounter. But second time, third time...it is beyond my comprehension. All I can guess is the guy must be too too desperate or blind or is out of his mind. So I don't believe Kichkandi is real. For me, it's Mythbuster style: Busted...lol...
