You can't renew your F-1 visa while in the US.

It's pretty simple. You don't need a visa to go to Nepal. To return back though, you must renew your visa. Quite a few of my friends have successfully renewed their visas and if you're in a good standing here, you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck.

How long are you staying in Nepal? Visa renewals can sometimes take 3-4 weeks (maybe even more) if the embassy is receiving large number of applications. It took 3 weeks for one of my friends to get his visa renewed last summer. First thing you want to do when you get to Nepal is pay the damn fee and get a date for the interview. I'm not sure about the specific documents you'll need though. Maybe your current and all past I-20s, undergrad diploma, letter of acceptance you got from your gradschool, etc.

riddle, could you ask your friends what documents they had to show at the interview and share the info here?

riddle is right about not needing a visa to go to Nepal. As a F-1 student, you need a valid visa ONLY to enter the States. After you enter, your I-20 is everything. You can stay in the States as long as your I-20 allows you, doesn't matter whether your visa expires before or after your I-20 expires.
